What is BrutusMUD?

Simply put, BrutusMUD is a text game for multiple players who connect to the server via the Internet. As the name suggests, it is a Multi User Dungeon, so the vast majority of players move in a fantasy world. However, the world in this game is limited only by the imagination of people willing to do something for this game, so it is possible to find some elements that do not quite fit into this world, but offer even more entertainment. The BrutusMUD system is based on CircleMUD. The main purpose of this game is fun, there is no need to be too tactical here and there is even no need to worry that the character will die.

Introduction

In the world of MUD, you can meet three basic groups. The first group is the players themselves. Then you can see the immortals. These are the people who take care of the world of BrutusMUD. They usually have a lot of their own worries, so their response time can increase to dizzying heights. The last group is the creatures generally called "mobs". This group includes everyone else you meet in this game world, from monsters and dragons to fairies or merchants.
As for character development, know that basic development ends at level 30, after which you choose one of three specializations for a given class. The maximum specialization level ends at level 60. After that, the character can only gain a rank. Generally, characters on ranks are called legends. There are 5 ranks that a character can achieve. By reaching the fifth rank, the character becomes a true legend and gains access to multiple branches of legendary skills.
More details about the available classes and gameplay options can be found in the following chapters of this text.

Rules

The basic rules of this MUD can be listed in the game with the command policy czech , but for simplicity I will list them here .

These rules change from time to time thanks to some repeat offenders and their scramble for words. Therefore, after logging in to the MUD, it is better to check how up-to-date these rules are.

Entering the game

To be able to play BrutusMUD, you just need to run the telnet application , which is available by default in both Windows and UNIX-like systems. However, the telnet capabilities (especially in Windows) are quite weak. Therefore, it is a good idea to get a program specifically designed for the MUD game. In Windows, the most famous are zMUD or MUSH clients, in UNIX-like systems, for example, MUDix or TF.

If you have one of the above programs ready, you can connect.

The BrutusMUD address is: www.brutusmud.net
The port on which the game runs is: 4444

After successful login, you will see a screen similar to this:
(if you only have proportional font, you won't be very smart about it :)

                            Based on CircleMUD 3.0,

A derivative of DikuMUD (GAMMA 0.0)
                                  Created by

choosing a name and password

Immediately after the initial screen, the following sentence will be displayed:

By what name do you wish to be known?

I recommend having a name thought of in advance, because after a moment of hesitation the system will automatically disconnect you.

2 basic tips when choosing a name:
  * try to think of an original name if possible
  * your name should not be vulgar or offensive in any way

If you have chosen a name, 3 cases may occur.
  Invalid name, please try another.

In this case, you have chosen a name that either contains illegal characters, conflicts with an existing name, or is on a so-called blacklist of prohibited names.
  Password:

If you see this, the chosen name is already being used by a player.
IMPORTANT: Your character's name must be authorized by immortals.
Without authorization, you won't be able to advance above level 5
  or use global communication channels.
Did I get that right, [name] (Y/N)?

This option appears when you choose a name that has not been used before. This is what you should see when creating a character. If you confirm Y, the following text will be displayed:
  New character.
Now you must enter a password for your character.
Give me a password for [name]:

I don't think there's any need to add anything else. The only thing I can say is that the password can be any sequence of characters. However, the correct password should be at least 4 characters long and should not be the same as your name.

After entering the password, the system will ask you to confirm the new password.

character selection

Before selecting a character, you still need to enter your email.
You will see this on the screen:

For playing this MUD, you should enter your e-mail address.
This address isn't public, it is only for Implementors to contact
you in case of some problems with the mud or your character.
If you don't want to write an e-mail, so write 'none', but
you WILL NOT be able to go over level 10!
If you specify a nonexistent email, you may find
your character deleted without knowing why, as the reason
  would be sent by email.
     Implementors
  Our e-mails:
               angela@brutus.troja.mff.cuni.cz
               andy@brutus.troja.mff.cuni.cz

  Your email:

And now for the character selection itself.

First, the player chooses a gender for their character. In the world of BrutusMUD, gender does not affect any skills or gender characteristics. The only case where choosing the opposite gender may be useful (if I leave out role play) is if there is equipment in this world that is only for one gender.
  What is your sex (M/F)?

When you see this line, select M (male) or F (female).

The next step in choosing a character is to select a race. There are 13 races available. Human, Elf, Dwarf, Hobbit, Orc, Minotaur, Faerie, Troll, Gnome, Goblin, Ogre, Pixie and Dryad. Naturally, each race has certain advantages and disadvantages. After selecting one of the races, you will be shown summary information about the given race. To explain all the parameters, we will take the Human race as an example.
  Summary - Human

Press R to redisplay race summary,
Press Y to pick this race,
Press N to return to race selection,
Press H to display help to those stats
  Your choice <R/Y/N/H>:

Let's start with the basic attributes.
Strength affects the carrying capacity and power of the character's attacks. It also partly affects the chance that the character will hit their enemy.
Intelligence affects the amount of mana, which naturally applies mainly to magicians. It also affects the chance that the character will hit their enemy.
Wisdom also affects the amount of mana, but this time it applies mainly to clerics. However, Wisdom is most important because it affects the number of practice points gained when advancing to a higher level. With practice points, the character "buys" skills. And surprisingly, Wisdom also affects the chance that the character will hit their enemy.
Dexterity affects the character's defense number and determines the amount of move points. In addition, it has a great influence on the chance of dodging an enemy's blow.
Constitution affects the number of lives for all classs.
Charisma affects the power of spells, and with higher Charisma you will do better in trading.

And now it's time for other character attributes.
Spellcasting affects the chance that the character will succeed in a spell.
Lifeforce recovery affects recovery from draining life force. This mainly applies to Sorcerers and their mana channel skill. However, it also affects other classs if they completely exhaust their magical powers.
Mana regeneration determines how fast a character's mana is restored.
Hit regeneration determines how fast a character's lost lives are healed.
Move regeneration determines how fast a character's movement points are restored.
Combat damage affects bonuses to the character's attack power.
Evasive bonus affects the defense number and mainly the chance to dodge an enemy's blow.
Carrying ability affects the character's carrying capacity.
Height gives the range of the minimum and maximum height of the race in cm, but it does not have much influence in the game.
Weight gives the range of the minimum and maximum weight of the race in ounces. A lot of weight can cause a lot of inconvenience if a heavy character dies in a hard-to-reach place and there is no one strong enough to carry the body to safety.
Learn speed has a great influence on the speed at which a character learns their skills.
The dodge bonus strongly influences the chance of dodging an enemy's blow if the character has the dodge skill.

Each race also has certain special attributes that are firmly determined by the race and cannot be influenced in any way.

The last step in choosing a character is choosing a class.
  Select a class: Possible specializations
    [C]leric Priest Druid Monk
    [T]hief Assassin Rogue Nightblade
    [W]arrior Fighter Shaolin Swordsman
    [M]agic-user Psionic Necromancer Sorcerer

  Class:

There are 4 basic classs to choose from in BrutusMUD. Each basic class is divided into 3 specializations at level 31, which are listed for that class, as seen above.

If you have already chosen a class, this line will appear:
Press enter to roll your stats.

After pressing Enter, your basic attributes will be randomly generated, influenced by your chosen class. Which could look like this, for example:
  Str: [17/0] Int: [14] Wis: [15] Dex: [16] Con: [17] Cha: [11]
Height: 188 cm Weight: 1430 ounces

  Keep these stats? (y/n)

If you don't like the generated stats, you can try to have others generated, you are limited to 20 attempts. If you don't like your attributes even after twenty attempts, the system will cancel your character selection. If the attributes suit you, you will be taken to the main game menu.
  *** PRESS RETURN:

  Welcome to BRUTUSMUD!

  0) Exit from BRUTUSMUD.
  1) Enter the game.
  2) Enter description.
  3) Read the background story.
  4) Change password.
  5) Delete this character.
  6) Change e-mail address.
  7) Change page length.
  8) Delete aliases.

     Make your choice:

There is no point in explaining the options further. The most commonly used are undoubtedly options 1 and 0. Option 2 is interesting, where you can write your own character description, which other players will see when they look at your character. This description is limited to about twenty lines.

Now your character is selected, so good luck in the game.

How to play

The main rule when playing is to follow the rules. Remember that ignorance is no excuse, so you don't have to read the rules at all (which are mentioned above), but of course you risk possible punishment for breaking these rules.
On the other hand, these rules are obvious to most decent people, and they don't even think of breaking them, but they must exist for those who are trying to get the most out of everything, no matter what it costs.
As for the gameplay itself, know that BrutusMUD tries to support player cooperation. That's why I recommend using the help group command . Try to enjoy the game as much as possible, but at the same time act respectfully towards other players, remember that you are not alone in MUD (although sometimes you may be lucky).

what is good to watch

The most important thing is to keep track of your most basic stats, which include your health, mana, and movement points. Naturally, there is no need to keep track of mana for warriors and thieves. When you first log in to BrutusMUD, you will have this information in a line called "prompt". In the beginning, it looks something like this:

18/18H 75/75M 40/40V G:5000 Needed: 1500 >

This line will be displayed after each of your actions or after one round of combat. You can edit this line to your liking. How to do this is explained at the end of this text under the prompt command .

Another thing that is often useful to monitor are the descriptions of the rooms you are standing in or the enemies you are about to encounter. This information has saved the lives of characters on more than one occasion.

Your affects are also important data, generally referred to as spellup or spelldown depending on how they affect your character. You can see all affects using the affect command , which I will mention in more detail in one of the other passages. Some of your basic affects can also be displayed in the "prompt".

Other things that need to be monitored differ from class to class. For example, clerics monitor their group with the group command , because they usually heal their comrades. You will usually find out for yourself what is worth monitoring while playing. In the beginning, it is a good idea to join a more experienced player who will help you with orientation, thanks to which you will not get bored with the game right at the beginning, when beginners die unnecessarily precisely due to inexperience.

Something that is useful, but not particularly necessary, is the gag command. If you are connected to a line with weaker data throughput, this command is invaluable. This command filters information about the ongoing battle. I personally recommend turning on the filter for all options and only monitoring information about your attacks (we...) and enemy attacks (mob...). The scan

command is quite important , which will list which players or enemies are in your vicinity. To be sure, I will describe the information that this command lists. The first column shows the direction in which the given creature is located. In square brackets you will see either [PLR] or [NPC]. PLR indicates the player, while NPC indicates other creatures. The last piece of information is the name of the given creature and how far away it is.

creating aliases

Aliases are one of the basic elements of the game. It is true that BrutusMUD can be played without aliases, but admit it yourself that every time you want to cast a spell, for example, you will have to type: cast 'spell name' (target) . And believe me, in some cast battles you really won't have time for that. There are 2 options for making aliases. The first one, which I won't elaborate on further, is creating aliases in your client, from which you will play BrutusMUD. The second option is creating aliases directly on the Brutus server. Creating aliases is very simple, but you need to distinguish whether the alias is targeted at someone else or only at your own character. First, create aliases targeted at another person or enemy.

  aliases for skills

alias [alias name] [skill name] $*

  aliases for spells

alias [alias name] cast 'spell name' $*

Aliases targeting only your own character differ in only one point. It is the last parameter $*, which expresses the target. We can omit it in this case. Be careful if your client does not process the sequence of characters $* in some other way, then the given sequence should be written as $$*, for example.
Important note : if you use a targeted alias and do not specify another parameter specifying the target, the target of the spell or skill will be your character.
  aliases for skills

     alias [alias name] [skill name]

  aliases for spells

alias [alias name] cast 'spell name'

You can usually find out whether a skill or spell can be targeted at someone else from the help for the given spell or skill. As for alias names, it depends on the taste of each player. There are minimalists who have all their aliases written in 2 characters, and on the contrary, players who have aliases that are disproportionately long. A great example can be the alias ultra hangover of an unnamed priest.
If you still don't know how to deal with aliases, don't be afraid to ask someone more experienced, as long as you treat others politely, they will certainly be happy to help you.

communication with other players

There are two basic ways to communicate with other players. Either through public channels, which are usually visible to all players, including immortals, or through private channels. It should be emphasized that vulgar language is NOT allowed on public channels. Communication using the following commands is included in these channels:

gossip - the main public channel, intended only for important communication
engossip - the main public channel, where the official language is English
shout - a public channel within the scope of one zone in which the character is located
gratz - a public channel intended for congratulating other players

Another important point regarding the public gossip channel is the ban on the use of colors. In other public channels, colors are partially tolerated, but this does not mean that you cannot be punished if you use some truly disgusting color combination or use colors for no reason.

Private (non-public) channels are, as their name suggests, intended for personal communication between players. Communication using the following commands falls into this area:
say - private channel within the scope of one room
in which the character is located
tell (reply) - private channel for communication between two people,
the tell command additionally requires one parameter with the name of
the person you want to communicate
with clansay - private channel for communication between clan members

The tell command communicates with one person. You can communicate with other players as you wish using this command. The only risk is that the player will ignore you, which will prevent you from communicating with tell . The say command is not public, but it is polite to stop using vulgarities and swearing if a player asks you to. You may even end up in a facility called jail to calm down .

Important commands

There are explanations for some more or less important commands here, but it's definitely worth knowing about them.

help

This command is a general basis. Follow the rule that it is good to try this command first and then ask questions. In the vast majority of cases, the help is well-written. Remember that the help is not about explaining the full principle of the operation of the command specified in the parameter, but about outlining its principle. Anyway, the use of this command is as follows.

  help <command>

In the command parameter, enter the name of the command or skill you are interested in.

prompt

The prompt command without a parameter will list the current settings. If you want to edit your character's basic information line, you can find the necessary instructions using the help prompt command . If you also specify a parameter, the current settings will be reset according to the specified parameter. An example of use might look like this:

  prompt &g<%Fe%Fs%Fd%FV%Fi%FS%FR%FM%Fo%FN%FF%FL%Fl%FE%FP%FB%Fg%FH&g>%h/%HH/%ph %v/%VV/%pv&g<&YG:%g %X&g>%o-%t&g>%FW&g>

In this case, the prompt is set up to suit the needs of the warrior. The first part lists his affects, the second part shows his current/maximum/percentage of health and movement points. The third part contains information about the amount of money he has on him and the experience gained. The last part contains information about the enemy and the character who is defending the others from that enemy.

wimpy

This command has saved countless lives. It is used with a numeric parameter and determines at what number of hits the character will flee from combat. Wimpy can normally be set to a maximum of 50% of the character's maximum hit points, but there are skills that allow you to set this limit even higher. For your safety, here's an example of how to use it:

  wimp 500

  wimp 35%

In the first case, if the character has less than 500 health, he will flee the fight. In the second case, the character will leave the fight if his health drops below 35%.

skill

This command will list all the skills that your character can gradually learn at given levels.

consider

This is a very useful command, especially at the beginning of the game. The usage is:

  consider <enemy>

After using this command, you will be told in a simple sentence whether the enemy you are about to face is not too strong or, on the contrary, not worth the effort. Unfortunately, it loses its meaning as your character levels up. Some classs even have skills that will determine the characteristics of the enemy much more accurately.

advance

  advance (specialization)

This command will take you to the next level after you have reached the required level of experience. If you want to advance to level 31, the system will ask you to specify the specialization you want to continue in the parameter.

practice

  practice

  practice <skill>

This command will list the skills you have learned. Another use of this command is with a parameter and allows you to learn the skill specified in the parameter. Remember that to learn a skill you must have at least 1 practice point.

affect

  affect

  affect revtime

  affect nam

This command will list the affects sorted by duration from smallest to largest. If you enter this command with the revtime parameter, the list will be listed in reverse order. The last possible parameter is nam, which sorts the affects by name from a to z.

If you missed something in this guide, please send your comments and suggestions to the email address provided at the beginning of this text. This guide was written by an experienced player, so some basic things may seem so obvious to him that he forgot to include them here.
