Thieves are experts in finding such items, because they can chance upon them when searching for "their money". Than they will be able just look around the room and say: "Hmmm look at this ... it looks like tree, but in fact it\'s the most secret trap." They can notice objects, that anyone else just pass along without notice them (of course if it won\'t blast at your face when stumbling upon ...) This skill also helps to spot some mechanisms like trap on doors or trap on chest.
