Well you have to wield wieapon, that is forged to opposite element (dark shield vs. fired weapon and fire shield vs. frozen weapon). When you hit enemy with such weapon in a special way, elemental damage done by weapon can absorb damage done by magical shield. Well so you won\'t hurt yourself by shield althought elemental damage of weapon is also halved.
